Our Bar & Service course “Bar Job Ready” includes the nationally accredited Food Handler’s certificate. This practical, 2-day course will cover an introduction to working in a bar, mixed drinks and cocktails, using the Point of Sale (POS), customer service and food handling.
Our classes are designed to replicate real-world hospitality experiences, taking place at our purpose-built campus featuring custom bar facilities that mirror a professional venue. Delivered by a team of experienced industry experts, the course emphasises interactive, hands-on learning in an engaging environment.
On enrolment you will be eligible for a discount to complete the RSA certificate.

This course will cover:
- Bar set-up, how to use standard bar equipment, cleaning and close-down
- How to make and serve mixed drinks and cocktails
- Beverage knowledge: an introduction to beer and wine, an overview of spirits and liqueurs
- Tray carrying, wine pouring and speed service
- Using the Point of Sale (POS), processing payments and completing reconciliation
- Providing quality customer service to a range of customers, tips to exceed customer expectations, and how to handle complaints
- Food Handling – you must have your Food Handler’s Certificate (or equivalent training) to work in food and beverage service
- After enrolment, you can access $20 OFF your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate
Delivery & Entry Requirements
- 2 x days 10am-4pm of practical skills and assessment
- Classes are held on-campus in our custom bar training rooms
- Observations for your food handler’s certificate are complete in-class
- Theory assessment for your food handler’s assessment is complete outside class (self-paced)
- Digital theory assessments on Canvas our Learning Management System
- Students have up to 3 months to complete the assessment
- You must be 18 year of age or over
- Access to a computer and the internet to complete your Food Handler’s certificate
- Digital skills to complete online assessments in English
- Complete a language, literacy and numeracy assessment as part of your enrolment, to ensure you can complete assessment requirements. You are able to:
- read and comprehend food safety policies and procedures.
- type long-answer questions without using translation services or artificial intelligence (AI)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): wear enclosed toe shoes with grip.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time (e.g. making drinks at the bar, and in simulated service periods as a Bar person)
Course Structure
SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety
- Food Handler’s Certificate Level 1
- Assessment will involve a combination of:
- In class: Observation of performance
- In-class: Oral questioning
- Outside-class: Theory questions; including short answers, matching questions, multiple choice and case studies, completed online/digitally
- Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available. If accessing RPL there will be costs associated, refer to our website.
Further Information
Pathways
After completing this course, you may wish to go on to our SIT40422 Certificate IV Hospitality. The unit (SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety) can be credit-transferred, and funding may also be available, if eligible. You can also complete the Coffee Job Ready course and we will provide a $30 discount and your RSA certificate.
Already hold my Food Handler’s Certificate
That’s OK, send us a copy prior to enrolment and we will discount the course by $30. No discounts will be provided post enrolment. You still come to both full days, you just don’t need to do any assessment.

What if I miss a class?
You can attend another session with another class if a suitable date and time is available.
Parking & Transport
We are a short walk (450 metres) from North Melbourne train station. If you need to drive, there is limited street parking, and time restrictions apply. We do not have private parking for students, but we do have a shelter for bike parking.
Is food provided?
A snack will be provided however you should bring your lunch. We have fridges and microwaves you can use.
What should I wear?
Please wear neat casual attire with closed-toe shoes. If your hair is longer than shoulder length, ensure it is tied back. Avoid exposing your midriff, as this poses a safety risk for burns.

Whilst we cannot guarantee employment, we work with a number of employers who recruit directly from our student pool. If you demonstrate great skills and maintain good participation, we may refer you to employers if they have jobs available.
